Karl’s journey began in the heart of public education, serving in the Stamford and Westport public school systems. His dedication and passion for education then led him to international waters, where he spent three years at the American School of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Upon his return to the United States, Karl found a home at Greenwich Academy, where he spent a decade shaping young minds as an Upper School history teacher, class dean, and even founding the school’s swim team.
In pursuit of further knowledge and leadership skills, Karl pursued an Ed.M in Independent School Leadership from Columbia University’s Teachers College in 2013. His desire for growth and new experiences then took him to Michigan, where he served as the Head of Upper School and Assistant Head of School at the University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe.
Karl’s journey back to Fairfield County in 2017 was prompted by the diagnosis of dyslexia in their third child. Recognizing the area’s exceptional reputation for schools catering to students with learning differences, Karl and his family returned to their hometown.
As Karl explored options for his own children, he delved deep into each school’s mission, philosophy, and approach to learning. Karl’s children experienced different paths: one found support at The Southport School, another thrived in a boarding school environment, and the eldest two flourished at Greens Farms Academy.
During this time, Karl accepted the position as Head of Upper School at New Canaan Country School, where he worked closely with the secondary school placement office at NCCS and sat on the admissions committee for Upper School applicants. Through his role as division head and by going through the independent day and boarding school application process with four of his children, Karl brings a unique perspective and depth to independent school consulting.
